Tell Lawmakers: Don't Ban Drag!

Join us to fight for drag artists, and for all in the LGBTQ community, to be safe and celebrated.

Drag is under attack, with more than a dozen proposed bills to criminalize performers and venues, eliminate safe spaces, punish small businesses, and make the world a whole lot less fabulous for everyone.

Don't ban drag in our state!

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a constituent of yours, I am writing today to ask you to vote NO on any bans to drag performances.

Drag is an art form that has been performed for centuries and across cultures. In the United States, RuPaul's Drag Race has been on the air for 15 seasons, reaching mainstream appeal and critical acclaim. It has opened the door for more queer representation in the media, creating an unprecedented impact on the LGBTQ community. Drag is now a global phenomenon and widely featured in TV and movies around the world.

Many of the same lawmakers attempting to ban LGBTQ-inclusive healthcare, books, and curricula are now targeting drag events. The increase in legislation mirrors a shocking rise in protests, armed threats, and violence against drag performers and venues that host them. GLAAD found at least 141 incidents in 2022 of anti-LGBTQ protests and threats targeting specific drag events, including white supremacists showing up armed at events in Ohio and Texas, and the firebombing of a Tulsa donut shop that had hosted a drag event last October.

Furthermore, many of these bills inaccurately redefine venues that host drag events as sexually-oriented businesses. This imposes an expensive burden on small business owners, incurring additional taxes, requiring venues to relocate, and creating other job-killing consequences. Other bills would ban public drag performances such as those that take place at Pride festivals, or ban minors from observing drag performers, including at family-friendly library events for people and children of all ages, such as Drag Story Hour.

Drag has long been a place of joy and expression. It's an art form and a sacred space where we can gather as family and friends. Drag performers are a vital beautiful part of our local thriving arts and LGBTQ communities.

Please take a stand for all of us by supporting drag and opposing any efforts to ban it!

Sincerely,
